Personal and professional info

Who is the artist?

My name is Jennie; I have had my hands in clay since I was 13 years old. After years of attending classes at the Edina Art Center, I went to the University of Minnesota, where I met my husband Joe. We both graduated with art degrees specializing in ceramics. Joe and I both teach ceramics at Powderhorn Park in Minneapolis, but I also teach at the Edina Art Center, the very place I started taking classes. When we are not making pots, we like to bike, canoe, camp, and rollerblade. Sometimes, we take our dog Theo along since he loves the outdoors as much as we do. When we''re at home, I often have a knitting project in hand, since that is one of my other passions. I just have to be careful that our cat Abbey doesn''t run off with the yarn.

Where is the work created?

All of our work is made at our home studio in South Minneapolis. Joe and I share the space. While most of my work is thrown, Joe''s specialty is hand built ceramics.

How is the work created?

Each piece is made by hand and individually crafted. Our process includes many steps to end up with a unique, one of a kind, functional piece of art. First, we prepare the clay and then throw each piece by hand. Once we trim each piece, we apply slips and under glazes to the surface in a variety of patterns and motifs. Then we hand carve each piece to create the crisp outlines and unique texture. After the piece dries for a number of days, we load the kiln for a bisque firing. After we glaze each piece, we load the kiln again for the final firing. The finished piece is now completely watertight and food safe, ready for you to use in your home. We hope you will bring your pieces into your life and enjoy using them every day.
